Hiring in plumbing

Hiring service plumbers and apprentices without losing your evenings

Screen plumbers on licence status, service versus new construction, and on-call willingness before the first interview.

Why this one is hard

What makes plumbing hiring different

Every trade has its own version of this. These are the ones that cost you people.

  • Licensed plumbers are the scarcest hire in the trades, and the good ones are not applying — they are being poached.
  • Drain cleaning experience reads as plumbing experience on a resume and is a different skill set entirely.
  • New construction and service plumbing attract different people; a rough-in crew veteran may hate diagnosing a customer's leak in their kitchen.
  • On-call rotation is the reason people quit, and nobody raises it until after they have been hired.

Plumbing demand is steadier than the seasonal trades, which means the constraint is not timing — it is that every shop within fifty miles wants the same licensed people.

The first conversation

What the interview actually asks

HireWRX interviews every applicant the same way you would, then puts the ones worth your time at the top. For plumbing, that means questions like these — asked at eleven at night if that is when somebody applies.

  1. 01

What is your licence, which state issued it, and is it current?

  2. 02

Talk me through finding a leak behind a finished wall.

  3. 03

How much of your work has been service calls in occupied homes versus new construction?

  4. 04

How do you feel about being in the on-call rotation, and how often?

Pass or fail

The facts worth confirming before anyone's time is spent

These are not judgement calls. They are either true or they are not, and finding out on day one is the expensive way.

  • Journeyman or master licence, and the state that issued it — reciprocity is not automatic.
  • Backflow prevention certification if you do commercial or irrigation work.
  • Medical gas certification for anyone near healthcare work.
  • Hours logged toward licensure, for apprentices worth developing.

Post the role. Read four reports instead of forty applications.

You still do the interviews and you still do the hiring. HireWRX just handles the part between the application landing and you deciding who is worth an hour.
