Hiring in HVAC

Hiring HVAC service and install technicians without losing your evenings

Screen HVAC technicians on refrigerant work, diagnostics and EPA certification before you spend an evening on interviews.

Why this one is hard

What makes HVAC hiring different

Every trade has its own version of this. These are the ones that cost you people.

  • Your hiring window is May and June, when every shop in town is hiring the same people and a good tech is gone in about forty-eight hours.
  • A resume says "HVAC technician" whether somebody ran service calls alone for six years or handed tools to the person who did.
  • Install and service look identical on paper and are different jobs — a strong install lead can be lost on an intermittent no-cool call.
  • You find out someone cannot braze, or will not go into an attic in July, on their first day rather than in the interview.

HVAC hiring is decided in the six weeks before cooling season. Shops that wait for the first heatwave are hiring whoever is still available.

The first conversation

What the interview actually asks

HireWRX interviews every applicant the same way you would, then puts the ones worth your time at the top. For HVAC, that means questions like these — asked at eleven at night if that is when somebody applies.

  1. 01

Walk me through diagnosing a system that cools but never reaches setpoint.

  2. 02

What do superheat and subcooling tell you, and when do you check each?

  3. 03

Have you run service calls on your own, or worked alongside a lead tech?

  4. 04

Tell me about a callback you caused, and what you did about it.

Pass or fail

The facts worth confirming before anyone's time is spent

These are not judgement calls. They are either true or they are not, and finding out on day one is the expensive way.

  • EPA Section 608 — and which type. Universal and Type II are not the same hire.
  • State or municipal HVAC licence where your jurisdiction requires one.
  • NATE certification, if it matters to you — many good techs do not hold it.
  • Driving record, because the job is a van and a customer driveway.

Post the role. Read four reports instead of forty applications.

You still do the interviews and you still do the hiring. HireWRX just handles the part between the application landing and you deciding who is worth an hour.
