The ladder
What the rungs in plumbing actually are
Job adverts use these titles loosely. This is what each one means in practice, and what you are doing all day on it.
- 01
Apprentice / helper
Digging, carrying, cutting and fitting under someone else. Rough-in on new construction is where most people learn fastest because you see the whole system before the walls close.
- 02
Journeyman plumber
Working alone to code. Service calls, repipes, water heaters, gas lines, and signing off your own work.
- 03
Service plumber
A van, a dispatch list and a homeowner watching. Diagnosis, pricing on the spot, and selling the repair as well as doing it.
- 04
Lead / foreman
Running a crew through a building. Prints, inspections, material, and the other trades who got there first.
- 05
Master plumber
The license that pulls permits and supervises journeymen. Another exam, more required years, and the route to your own company.
Tickets and licenses
What to get, and in what order
The ones you cannot work without come first. After that, the question is which one pays for itself quickest — not which one sounds most impressive.
Not optional
Registered apprenticeship and documented hours
Journeyman licensing is hours-based in nearly every state, commonly four to five years of documented supervised work plus classroom hours. Same trap as electrical: undocumented years leave you skilled and unlicensable. Register and keep your own hour records.
Journeyman plumber license
State or municipal, exam-based, and the difference between helper pay and plumber pay.
Worth having, in rough order of return
Backflow prevention assembly tester certification
The best-value second ticket in the trade. Testing is required annually by law on a great many commercial properties, the certification is short, and it turns into recurring work that almost nobody else on the truck can do.
Medical gas installer certification (ASSE 6010 / NITC)
Required for piping in hospitals and clinics. A small, well-paid specialty with a limited pool of certified installers.
Gas fitting endorsement
Separately licensed or endorsed in many jurisdictions. Water heaters, boilers and appliance work are a large share of service calls and you need it to do them legally.
How the money works
How plumbing pay is actually structured
No rates here on purpose — they vary by market and by year, and a stale number is worse than none. What does not change is the structure, and it is the part nobody explains before you take the job.
New construction is hourly and steady. Service plumbing is where the structure changes: commission or flat-rate pay on the ticket is common, which means a good salesperson with average wrenches can out-earn a brilliant plumber who hates quoting. Ask exactly how the plan works and what the average on the team earned, not the top. On-call rotation usually carries a stipend plus the call-out rate, and in a cold climate a January night can be worth more than the rest of the week. Backflow testing and medical gas are the two endorsements most likely to pay for themselves inside a year.
The interview
What you will be asked
Not a warning — a list to think about on the drive over. These are the questions that separate somebody who has done the work from somebody who has watched it.
- 01
“How many documented apprentice hours do you have?”
- 02
“Walk me through finding a leak with no visible water.”
- 03
“How do you size a drain line, and what slope do you set?”
- 04
“Have you priced work in front of a customer, or did someone else quote it?”
- 05
“What is your process before you cut into a wall?”
Timing
When this trade is actually hiring
Applying in the right six weeks is worth more than almost anything you can put on a resume.
Service plumbing hires all year, and hardest in the first cold snap and immediately after a hard freeze — if you are looking in winter in a cold market, you have leverage. New construction follows the build schedule, so track who just broke ground. Spring is when remodel work picks up and shops staff for it.
Questions
Common questions about plumbing work
- How long does it take to get licensed?
- Typically four to five years of documented apprentice hours plus the exam, and the number varies by state. The clock starts when your hours start being counted properly, which is why registering matters more than starting early.
- New construction or service?
- Rough-in on new construction teaches you systems faster because you see them whole, and it is usually straight hourly with predictable days. Service pays more at the top, needs you to be comfortable talking to customers and pricing work, and no two days look alike. Learning on construction and moving to service is a common and sensible path.
- Is backflow certification worth it?
- For most service plumbers, yes — it is one of the shortest courses in the trade and it unlocks annual legally-required testing on commercial buildings, which is recurring revenue your employer values and very few techs on the van can do.
- Do I need my own tools?
- Hand tools, usually yes. Powered and specialty equipment — cameras, jetters, machines — is the company’s. Ask what the list is before your first day, and ask whether there is a tool allowance, because many shops have one and do not advertise it.
Put your plumbing experience somewhere it keeps working
A free profile holds your licenses, tickets, equipment and where you have worked, so you stop retyping them into every application. It gives you a page at your own address that you can text to a foreman or a friend who says they are hiring. And when a company hires through HireWRX, every application is read and scored — nobody’s gets skipped because it arrived at eleven at night.
- Free, and free to delete — your data goes with it.
- You choose whether the page is public at all.
- Pay expectations are never on your public page.
- No employer notes or scores ever appear on it.
